1. Introduction
This privacy policy explains how the "ClipToClass" Chrome extension ("we", "our", or "us") handles your information. We are committed to protecting your privacy and to describing our data practices accurately rather than vaguely.
In short: everything you create in ClipToClass — your settings, transcripts, vocabulary, and review history — is stored on your own device. Nothing about your learning content is ever sent to us. The one exception is an optional, anonymous usage statistic feature that is switched off unless you explicitly turn it on, described in Section 4.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information, health information, financial information, authentication information, personal communications, precise location, or web browsing history.
Specifically, the following never leave your device:
- The videos you watch — their URLs, IDs, titles, or thumbnails
- Subtitles, transcripts, or any text spoken in a video
- Vocabulary you save, your notes, or your review history
- Your Google Gemini API key
- Your name, email address, or any account identifier
If you enable the optional usage statistics described in Section 4, we record your approximate country. We never store your IP address, and we never collect precise or device-level location such as GPS coordinates.
3. Data Stored on Your Device
The extension uses your browser's local and synced extension storage to hold:
- Settings — API key, target and interface language, CEFR level, font size,
and your telemetry choice (
user_settings, synced by Chrome across your own signed-in devices) - Session data — the current and recent video sessions, including
transcripts, generated exercises, and subtitle overlay preferences

session_*,clip_session_*,past_sessions,overlay_*) - Vocabulary and review data — saved and marked words, spaced-repetition
flashcards, and your review history (
saved_words,marked_words,srs_cards,srs_review_log,srs_meta,known_words)
This data stays on your device. It is not transmitted to us and we cannot read it. You can erase all of it at any time by removing the extension, or clear individual sessions and words from within the extension.
4. Optional Anonymous Usage Statistics
The extension can report anonymous usage counts that help us understand which features people actually use and where setup fails. This is off by default. It only operates after you explicitly enable it — during onboarding, or via the one-time prompt shown to existing users — and you can turn it off again at any time in Settings.
What is sent, when enabled
- Which features you open, and whether a generation or review succeeded
- Which video platform was detected (for example "youtube" or "netflix") — the platform name only, never the video
- Your CEFR level, target language, and interface language
- Counts such as words exported or cards reviewed, and your review streak length
- The extension version, and the number of days since you installed it
- Your approximate country, so we know which languages and regions to prioritise (see "Location" below)
- A randomly generated identifier that is not derived from you, your device, or your browser, and is not linked to any account
What is never sent
Video URLs, IDs, or titles; transcripts or subtitle text; saved words, notes, or definitions; your API key; your name or email; precise or device-level location.
Location
Like any internet request, these statistics reach our analytics provider carrying your IP address. It is used only to determine your approximate country and is then discarded without being stored — our analytics project is configured with IP discarding enabled. We therefore hold country-level information and never a raw IP address or anything more precise.
Who processes it
Statistics are processed by PostHog on servers in the European Union, acting as our data processor under a data processing agreement.
Withdrawing consent
Turning the setting off in Settings stops all transmission immediately and deletes the random identifier from your device, so any later opt-in cannot be linked to earlier activity.
5. AI Processing With Your Own API Key
ClipToClass uses Google's Gemini API to generate transcripts, definitions, exercises, and translations. You supply your own Google Gemini API key, and these requests go directly from your browser to Google — they do not pass through our servers, and we never see their contents or your key.
Because Google receives this content, Google's own terms and privacy policy apply to it. Note in particular that Google may use content submitted through their free API tier to improve their products, whereas paid usage is excluded from this. Please review Google's Gemini API terms to understand how your data is handled on their side.
6. Embedded Video Playback
When you review a saved word, the extension embeds the corresponding video
segment through a player page we host at video.cliptoclass.com, which loads
YouTube's privacy-enhanced player (youtube-nocookie.com). This page receives
only the video ID and the start and end times of the segment. Playing an embedded
video means YouTube may collect data as described in Google's privacy policy.
7. Data Sharing and Transfers
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We do not transfer data to third parties for advertising, credit assessment, or any purpose unrelated to the extension's single purpose. The only third party that receives any data is PostHog, solely as our analytics processor and solely when you have enabled the optional statistics described in Section 4.
8. Remote Code
The extension does not load or execute remote code. All executable code is packaged within the extension itself. The embedded video player described in Section 6 runs in its own isolated frame and cannot access extension data.
9. Children's Privacy
ClipToClass is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
10. Your Rights
Your learning data lives on your device and is entirely under your control — deleting it, or removing the extension, requires nothing from us.
The only data we hold is the optional usage statistics from Section 4, and only if you enabled them. Because those carry no name, email, account, or IP address, we generally cannot connect them to you even if you ask us to. If you would like them erased, contact us with your random identifier — you can find it in Settings — and we will delete every event associated with it. You may also withdraw consent at any time in Settings, which stops collection immediately and deletes that identifier from your device.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the extension evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above and, where the change affects what is collected, by an in-extension notice. Continued use after changes indicates acceptance.
